Kwikset Kevo 2nd Generation has a unique design compared to others of the best smart locks. Kevo's security and convenience features are good but lack the quality of other smart door locks we tested.

When we tested the Kwikset Kevo 2nd Generation, it was better than the previous version in a couple ways. Notably, there's now an auto-lock option, which helps make the lock more secure. The lock was also more responsive to commands sent by the mobile app. Unfortunately, you won't find a key fob in the box as with the first version. It still works with a fob, but you can expect to spend up to $25 to get one.

The Kwikset Kevo's potential to improve security is one of the lowest in our comparison: 68 percent. This can be attributed to the lack of any alarm functions and that Kevo 2 doesn't track when someone uses a physical key. While this doesn't mean Kevo won't improve the security of your home, this ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 rated lock is not as robust as some other locks we tested, particularly Schlage Connect and August Smart Lock.

Kevo's mobile app makes the lock easy to use because it's very simple. While the app allows you to invite guests, it doesn't give you much control over the lock's settings. This means you need to remove the cover on the Kevo's interior escutcheon to toggle settings such as auto-lock and touch-to-lock.

Kwikset lets you send unlimited eKeys for free for family members and other guests. You can give permanent access or create keys that only work on a schedule. Generic guest keys only work for a 24-hour period before they expire, which is nice if you're an Airbnb host.

The lock doesn't have remote access, but you can add it by purchasing Kevo Plus, an optional accessory. Our major complaint about the Kevo Plus is that it costs $100, making it the most expensive Wi-Fi adapter for any smart lock we tested, higher than the $79 average for this type of add-on.

One convenience feature that helps make Kevo an excellent smart lock is Touch to Open, which scans for your phone or key fob, so you can touch the lock to activate it when you get to the door. This isn't fully automatic but overcomes a common problem with auto-unlock: reliability. To make sure Touch to Open doesn't accidentally unlock if your phone's near the lock inside, it only looks for phones and fobs outside your home.

Should you buy the Kwikset Kevo 2nd Generation?

Although Kevo replaces your deadbolt, you can rekey the lock with Kwikset's SmartKey tool. With this tool, you can switch compatible keys without visiting a locksmith.

Kwikset Kevo only requires a smartphone to work properly, but it also works with Alexa, IFTTT, Nest and Honeywell smart home platforms and the Ring video doorbell. Kwikset provides an industry-standard one-year warranty on Kevo's electronic components. The lock’s mechanical components carry a lifetime warranty.
