The best top load washer overall

The Maytag Smart Top Load Washer with Extra Power connects to your smartphone for added convenience

Reasons to buy

+
Large drum capacity
+
Wide range of customizable settings
+
Remote control via app

Reasons to avoid

-
Somewhat noisy
-
Flimsy detergent tray
-
Struggles with bulky items

Maytag's Smart Top Load Washer with Extra Power combines impressive cleaning power with modern features, but it's loud.

The delivery team arrived in under 20 minutes and set up the washer after arranging with J.B. Hunt. When our reviewer, Camryn's, partner paired it with their smartphone, they noticed a slight dent on the front panel, but it wasn't big enough to report.

This Maytag model has a glass top that lets you see what's going on inside. Its dimensions are 27 1/4 inches wide, 27 7/8 inches deep, and 42 7/8 inches tall. Camryn found it manageable despite its 139-pound weight. It has 13 wash settings and a 2.4-inch LCD screen, where you can adjust spin speed, water temperature, and so on. It's nice to have a pull-out detergent drawer, but it's a bit flimsy.

Over the course of a month, Camryn tested the washer with various items, from clothes to bedding. The spacious 5.2-cubic-foot drum easily accommodated up to eight full-size bath towels. The washer has five temperature settings, four water levels, and an Extra Power button to fight stubborn stains.

While the washer effectively cleaned and left laundry smelling fresh, it struggled with tougher stains like mustard and tomato sauce, so Camryn had to pre-treat them. Additionally, heavy items like bed blankets tended to go off balance during the spin cycle, and the machine operates at around 60 decibels. It also comes with an app, so you can monitor cycles and find stain guides.

The best compact top load washer

This washer may not wow, but it delivers where it matters

Reasons to buy

+
Good cleaning performance
+
Removable agitator allows for larger loads
+
Reasonable price tag

Reasons to avoid

-
No display or way to know how long a load will take
-
Somewhat loud operation

You can get the job done effectively with the Whirlpool 3.8-3.9 Cu. Ft. Top-Load Washer, even though it doesn't stand out for its aesthetics. Although there's no display and it's a little noisy, it's got a handy agitator for larger loads. It's also cheap.

Because of its size, the washer is usually delivered by couriers, and installation takes about half an hour. If you decide to install it yourself, make sure to level it properly; you might need a wrench for the adjustable feet.

This straightforward model measures 27 x 28 x 44 inches and features dials for setting soil level, temperature, and load type, plus a quick wash option. It has a self-cleaning cycle with Affresh, so it's easy to keep clean. Stainless steel drums come with removable plastic agitators, so you can wash bulky things. You'll need to add detergent, bleach, and fabric softener directly to the drum, though.

In terms of performance, the washer cleans effectively and leaves clothes smelling fresh. After a month of use, our reviewer, James, noticed that heavy-soiled clothes sometimes needed another wash. The 'whites' setting in warm water was enough to get out most stains, but some needed bleach and cold water to get out.

The lack of an agitator lets you wash large items like queen-size comforters or towels without any problems. While it operates at around 60 dB, making some noise, it's manageable for a mid-range washer. It spins out excess water efficiently, reducing dryer time. After powering on, it needs a second press to start the adjustments.

"The Whirlpool 3.8-3.9 Cu. Ft. Top-load washer is not going to turn heads, but it doesn’t have to. While light on features—it doesn’t even have a display—and loud in operation, it does a good job cleaning and comes with one very cool trick: a removable agitator that allows larger loads. Plus, the price isn’t bad."

How to choose the best top load washer for you

A good top-load washer usually comes with a range of useful features to make your life easier, plus at least a five-cubic-foot capacity. This is a substantial size suitable for large families or those who prefer to wash a huge pile of laundry all at once. To get the most out of your appliance, take a look at our guide on how to use a top-load washer.

Many of the best top-load washers are also Energy Star Certified. This is an internationally recognized and trusted mark of high efficiency – which is always a must for any appliance, especially if you use it weekly.

Plus, top-load washers are usually designed with a speed wash, lasting around 30 minutes or sometimes less. You can also expect to find a deep clean cycle specifically crafted to remove pesky stains and a super hot wash to help eliminate bacteria.

Check the maximum spin speed when choosing a top-load washer for your home. The best appliances have around 700 revolutions per minute (RPM). The higher the RPM, the less time your clothes will take to dry.

Top load washer FAQs

What are the benefits of a top load washer?

Top load washers appeal for many reasons, though a big factor is affordability. You can find top-rated and affordable top-load washers for as little as $399, making them a more accessible purchase.

Convenience is also of note, with a top load washer being easier to fill daily, saving you from kneeling or bending over. Filling their washer from the top is exceptionally useful for those with limited mobility, though this appliance makes it difficult to stack even the best dryer on top. If that's important to you, you may want to opt for one of the best washer-dryer combos.

Customers who purchase top-load washers also often enjoy their relative simplicity. There’s no need to fill or clean an extra detergent drawer, as this is added into the drum at the top instead. Capacity is another draw that makes this type of washer appealing to families or larger homes; if you can fit more into one cycle, it’s time-saving and energy-efficient.

If you’re prone to forgetting an odd sock and finding it after you’ve put a load of laundry on, a top-load washer might appeal. With it, you can always add garments mid-cycle by lifting the lid, an option you don’t have with front-load washers.

More direct comparisons are in our top load vs. front load washers guide.

How much do top load washers cost?

Many households like top-load washers because of their ergonomic design and ease of use. Brand, capacity, features, and energy efficiency ratings affect the cost of top-load washers. Basic top-load washers start around $400 to $700.

These models typically offer essential wash cycles and functions for those who want a straightforward appliance without extra frills. Amana and Insignia offer top-load washers at budget-friendly prices, typically between $700 and $1,200.

This price range has more advanced features, like more wash settings, bigger drums, and better energy efficiency. High-end top-load washers cost $1,200 to $2,000 or more. Whirlpool, LG, and Samsung all have smart controls and digital displays that combine functionality with modern technology.

They usually come with steam cleaning, specialized wash cycles, and high durability. You should also consider installation and delivery costs, as well as maintenance costs, and top-notch models from brands like Maytag, Bosch, and GE. With enhanced performance and sleek aesthetics, these brands cater to people who want quality and innovation.

The best top load washer depends on your laundry needs, your budget, and the features you want.

How long do top load washers last?

Most top-load washers last 10 to 14 years if they're kept well. They are known for their durability and ease of use. A washer's lifespan depends on many things, like quality, frequency of use, and maintenance practices. Brand and model also play a big role.

A high-end brand can last longer because it has stronger materials and better technology. Budget models might not last as long because of lower-quality components. Frequency of use is also an important factor. If you use a washer several times a week, it's more likely to wear out.

Maintaining your top-load washer will extend its life. Regular heavy loads can strain the motor and other components. You can prevent premature failures by cleaning the drum, checking hoses for leaks, and not overloading it. You can also extend the life of your washer by inspecting and replacing worn parts like belts and seals.

When is the best time to buy a top load washer?

Consumers can take advantage of discounts and promotions during several key times of the year when looking for a top-load washer deal. There are usually big sales on top-load washers around Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday, which can greatly affect the price and selection.

The retailers usually offer discounts during these busy times, so this is an excellent time to shop for washers. During this time, retailers clear out older inventory when manufacturers release new models, so it's a good time to shop.

Due to this, you can get great deals on last year's models, which still work great and have great features. Spring is a great time to buy appliances. Retailers often have spring sales to encourage home improvement projects, so washers and other appliances are often on sale.

There may be many energy-efficient models on Earth Day, but it's also a good time to find deals as retailers try to move inventory before the new year. For example, you might find markdowns on top-load washers during the December sales.
