Labour Day sales 2024: what you need to know
When is Labor Day 2024?
Labor Day is a federal holiday that always falls on the first Monday in September which, this year, is September 2nd, 2024. The Labor Day holiday weekend will start Friday, August 30th, and lasted through to that Monday.
What Labor Day sales do we expect to see?
Labor Day weekend is an excellent opportunity to fit in some shopping before hectic schedules take hold. Summer may be almost over, but you can usually expect to see massive discounts on summer gear, like patio sets, outdoor furniture, grills, along with the usual suspects like electronics and mattresses. It may not make sense to buy items for the summer when the season is dwindling down to an end, but by next year, you'll be glad you did.
Mattresses: A select few mattress brands will offer a small discount on their items for Labor Day: those last minute back-to-school shoppers who will be living away from home may want to look into brands like Casper for bargain mattress buys.
Clothing: Some stores are just introducing their fall collections, but the massive discounts are usually seen in the summer clothing sections. Why? These Labor Day sales are also, in part, clearance sales to make room for newer collections.
Outdoor furniture and grills: For the same reasons as above, many stores are clearing out their warehouses of the latest models of summer and outdoor gear and furniture to make room for next season's, resulting in decent discounts for customers.
Electronics: As people prepare to stay indoors during the colder weather, it makes sense to offer upgrades on electronics like TVs and computers that will keep them occupied during the fall and winter months.
When will Labor Day deals go live?
Many Labor Day sales are live NOW. Brands and resellers alike are offering tempting discounts of up to 60% across small and major appliances and yard care categories. While these all sound very appealing, you'll come across deeper discounts and more choice from stores as we head into the weekend.
The sales event will last from hereon-in mid through to midnight September 3.
Labor Day vs Black Friday
Both Labor Day and Black Friday will see big discounts on major appliances and lawn care brands. The main point of difference is that Labor Day has more flash sales on mattresses, whereas the Black Friday deals you see will be more consistent a couple of weeks prior to the main event across washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and lawn mowers.
There is then, of course, Cyber Monday which throws a curve ball to all this, depending on what you want to buy. This would be the best time to buy a vacuum cleaner or small appliance, providing stock remains. Over the years we've seen prices dropped to their lowest ever price on Cyber Monday, but you just run the risk of the product you actually want either being no longer being available to buy or that the price is inflated again.
Remember: between these major shopping events is Amazon Prime Day. While we don't have a date (yet) when this will be, the past few years have shown us that it'll be in the weeks leading up to Black Friday. This makes it a good opportunity to scoop up a discount on a small appliance before other resellers get involved, and to get what you actually want rather than something better considered a "panic buy".
